You've managed to find the FAQ (comprised, as is custom, of things no one's asked) so you deserve at least a few answers.

Why Neocities?
This isn't easy to answer, but that's only because my attraction to the Neocities model is a visceral one. It's kind of a struggle to articulate it in terms more sophisticated than, "Daddy LIKE." Knife to my neck, though, I would say my main attraction is Neocities' dedication to the web as a truly personal tool of expression and communication. Neocities is not an advertising platform and doesn't have to compromise its users' right to expression or standardize content presentation the way that ad platforms do. Note: I do not say 'ad-supported platform.' Twitter and Facebook sell services (i.e. your material and attention) to advertisers. They exist to make money by selling ads.

Why is your website ugly?
I prefer to think of it as camp. It is personalized, built from the ground up from code I type myself, and exaggerated for effect and entertainment. My site's spirit is enlarged to show texture. I'm burnt out on enforced tidiness. I want to slap stickers all over things and write in the margins of all my books.
